Green Agritainment in action: successful pilot event in Sofia promotes sustainable living and environmental awareness

On 20 May 2026, the Bulgarian partner of the Erasmus+ project Green Agritainment: VET Strategies for Edutainment in European Agritourism successfully organised a pilot educational event in Sofia, Bulgaria, involving 20 participants. The activity was implemented as part of Work Package 4, dedicated to testing and evaluating educational and sustainability-focused Agritainment practices.

The event combined environmental education, experiential learning, reflection, and outdoor activities designed to strengthen participantsโ€™ connection with nature while promoting sustainable behaviours.

Learning Through Experience

The event began with an interactive presentation delivered by a specialist working in the field of agritourism. Participants were introduced to the objectives of the Agritainment project, the importance of sustainable tourism, environmental responsibility, and the role that nature-based educational activities can play in creating more conscious and environmentally friendly communities.

Following the introduction, participants took part in a guided reflection activity inspired by the educational practices developed within the project. Using green worksheets, they were invited to observe their surroundings and express their thoughts, emotions, and perceptions related to nature and environmental wellbeing.

Many participants described feelings of calmness, balance, and connection. Several created drawings representing birds, trees, natural landscapes, and peaceful outdoor environments. During the discussion, participants shared that modern lifestyles often leave little time to reconnect with nature and that the activity helped them become more aware of both their surroundings and their own wellbeing.

Exploring Nature and Sustainability

The second part of the event included a guided outdoor walk through a natural environment. Participants were encouraged to observe biodiversity, discuss environmental challenges, and reflect on how daily choices influence both personal wellbeing and the health of the planet.

The activity promoted observation skills, environmental awareness, and appreciation for natural ecosystems. Participants exchanged ideas about sustainable habits, waste reduction, responsible consumption, and practical ways to incorporate environmentally conscious behaviours into everyday life.

The outdoor learning experience demonstrated one of the key principles of Agritainment: combining education and enjoyment to create meaningful and lasting learning outcomes.

Positive Results and Impact

At the end of the event, participants completed the projectโ€™s evaluation and impact assessment tools. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Participants reported increased awareness of environmental issues, a stronger appreciation for nature, and greater motivation to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. The evaluation results showed the highest levels of satisfaction across all measured indicators, demonstrating the effectiveness of experiential outdoor learning in promoting green attitudes and behaviours.

Participants highlighted that the event helped them:

  • โœ… Better understand the importance of sustainability.
  • โœ… Reflect on their personal relationship with nature.
  • โœ… Discover practical ways to live more environmentally responsibly.
  • โœ… Appreciate the educational value of outdoor activities.
  • โœ… Recognise the positive effects of nature on emotional wellbeing and quality of life.

Building a Greener Future Through Agritainment

The Sofia pilot event successfully demonstrated how Agritainment methodologies can support environmental education through engaging, accessible, and enjoyable activities.

As the project approaches the completion of Work Package 4, the results obtained in Bulgaria confirm the potential of Green Agritainment as an innovative educational approach capable of fostering environmental awareness, promoting sustainable lifestyles, and strengthening the connection between people and nature.

The Agritainment consortium will continue disseminating these results and sharing best practices with educators, trainers, agritourism professionals, and stakeholders across Europe.
